Why the Cheapest Roofer Isn’t Always the Best Choice

When you’re getting quotes for roofing work it’s tempting to go with the cheapest option. It’s understandable — roofing isn’t cheap and saving money where you can makes sense. But in our experience the cheapest quote often ends up costing you more in the long run. Here’s why.A Real Example — Guttering Repair in PershoreWe recently quoted a job to remove and reseal OG guttering on a property in the local area. Our price was £350. The homeowner found someone to do it for £200.On the surface that looks like a saving of £150. But here’s what a proper guttering repair actually involves — removing all the sections carefully without cracking them, cleaning out years of debris and old sealant, applying quality new sealant correctly, refitting everything properly and checking the fall is correct so water drains away properly.Do that job properly and £350 is a fair price. Do it quickly and cheaply for £200 and the chances are the sealant won’t last, the joints will leak again within a year and the homeowner will be paying for it to be done again — properly this time.A Real Example — Bird Damage Roof Repair in WorcesterWe were called out to a property in Worcester where birds had caused serious damage to the roof. Our quote was £1,300 — which included stripping back the affected area, replacing rotting timbers, repairing the valley, installing new felt and fitting bird excluders to prevent it happening again.Someone undercut us and got the job.A proper repair in this situation requires removing tiles carefully, assessing and replacing any rotten timber, repairing or replacing the valley, installing new breathable felt and fitting quality bird excluders. Skip any of those steps and the problem will come back — probably worse than before. What to Look for When Getting Roofing QuotesNot all quotes are equal. Here are some questions worth asking any roofer before you commit:Are you fully insured? Any reputable roofer should have public liability insurance. If they can’t prove it walk away. Are you registered with a trade body? Checkatrade, TrustATrader and similar organisations vet their members and give you protection if something goes wrong. What exactly is included in the price? A good quote should be itemised so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. Vague quotes with just a single price are a red flag.Do you offer a guarantee on your work? Reputable roofers stand behind their work. If they won’t guarantee it ask yourself why.How long have you been trading? Experience matters in roofing. Ask to see examples of previous work or check their reviews. The Real Cost of Cheap RoofingA roof that’s been repaired incorrectly can lead to ongoing leaks and water damage, structural timber rot, mould and damp inside the property, the same repair needing to be done again within a year or two, and in serious cases much more expensive remedial work down the line. The cheapest quote today can easily become the most expensive decision you ever made. Why Cole Roofing Prices FairlyWe’re not the cheapest roofer and we don’t try to be.
